Which Stone Shape Should You Choose for an Engagement Ring?

When creating an engagement ring, one of the first decisions is often choosing the shape of the centre stone.

Round, oval, pear, marquise, emerald cut, cushion... each shape creates a different presence on the hand and can completely change the character of the ring.

There is no universally better shape. The right choice depends on what you are looking for: more brilliance, a more elongated appearance, cleaner geometric lines, greater visual presence, or simply a shape you naturally feel drawn to.

Are shape and cut the same thing?

Not exactly. Shape refers to the outline of the stone when viewed from above, such as round, oval, pear or marquise. Cut relates to the way the stone has been faceted and how it interacts with light.

This means that two stones with the same shape can still have different brilliance and proportions. At Amaré, we always assess each stone individually, considering not only its shape, but also its overall appearance and how it will work within the ring design.

Round: classic and exceptionally brilliant

The round shape is one of the most recognisable and timeless choices for an engagement ring.

Its symmetry and brilliant-style faceting encourage strong light reflection, making it particularly known for its sparkle.

It is also incredibly versatile, working beautifully in a simple, delicate solitaire as well as in designs with side stones or other details.

Oval: elegant with an elongated presence

The oval combines soft lines with an elongated silhouette, creating an elegant and delicate presence on the finger.

Compared with a round stone of the same weight, it can appear visually larger because of the way its proportions are distributed. It is also a very versatile shape, working beautifully in both simple designs and compositions with side stones.

Not all ovals are the same

Two oval stones with the same weight can look surprisingly different. Some are longer and narrower, while others have a fuller, more rounded silhouette.

This relationship between length and width has a significant impact on the stone’s visual presence and on how it works within the design of the ring.

Pear: delicate and distinctive

The pear shape combines a rounded end with a more defined point.

It also offers plenty of freedom within the design. It can be worn in the more traditional orientation, with the point facing outwards, or incorporated in less conventional ways depending on the composition of the ring.

Marquise: striking and beautifully elongated

The marquise is characterised by its elongated silhouette and two pointed ends, creating a very elegant and expressive presence on the finger.

Because of its proportions, it can appear visually larger than other stones with the same carat weight.

It is also a very versatile shape. In a solitaire it can feel delicate and sophisticated, while an east-west orientation or a more sculptural design can give it a much more contemporary expression.

In 2026, elongated shapes, particularly marquise and oval, continue to receive a great deal of attention for their character and the visual coverage they create across the finger.

Emerald cut: clean lines and geometric elegance

The emerald cut is defined by its rectangular shape and broad, linear facets, creating a more structured and elegant visual effect than the more scintillating sparkle of a brilliant cut.

It is an especially beautiful choice for someone drawn to clean lines, symmetry and a more minimalist or architectural aesthetic.

Because it has a more open central area, the clarity of the stone can also be more visible, so each stone should be selected with particular attention to its individual characteristics.

Cushion: soft and romantic

The cushion combines a square or slightly rectangular outline with rounded corners, creating a soft and balanced appearance.

Its proportions can vary considerably. Some cushions are more square, while others have a distinctly elongated silhouette, which can significantly change how the stone appears on the finger.

Which shape makes a stone look larger?

This is one of the questions we hear most often.

Carat weight tells us how much the stone weighs, but it does not determine its visual size on its own. Two stones with the same weight can look quite different depending on their shape and proportions.

More elongated shapes, such as oval, marquise and pear, tend to create greater visual presence along the finger.

For this reason, at Amaré we do not look at carat weight alone. We also consider the stone’s measurements in millimetres, its length, width and overall proportions to understand how it will actually appear within the ring.

This allows us to compare options more realistically and find the stone that best reflects the visual presence the client has in mind.

A few interesting facts about stone shapes

The orientation of the stone can completely transform the design. Elongated shapes such as oval, marquise, cushion or emerald cut can also be set horizontally in an east-west orientation, creating a very different expression.

Stone shapes are not limited to diamonds. Sapphires and other gemstones used in engagement rings can also be cut into a wide range of shapes, allowing you to explore the same language of proportion and design.

Pointed shapes require particular attention in the design. Marquise, pear and princess-cut stones, for example, have more vulnerable points that should be properly protected by the setting for greater security in everyday wear.
